I’ve always loved a craft, but while I was in college, I really became a crafter. My previous outlet had been painting, which I adored, but just took too long. My medium of choice is acrylics, so setting everything up and mixing the same colors correctly alone would take 30 minutes to an hour. Crafts are simply more easily accessible. With limited time, money, and storage, painting went out and fiber came in. First, I started to knit, which I’ve always known how to do but never made anything from (this unfortunately still stands true), then it was sewing, painting signs for Greek life, etc. I would try anything that was feasible, which is why I was able to keep up with crafting in a more realistic way. When life gets busy, I can still spend a quick 20 minutes scrapbooking and leave feeling accomplished. Although there still won’t always be time for crafting, there’s much more time for crafting than for traditional art practices.
